Joan Blaeu (1596-1673)
original engraved map, hand coloured, 37.5 x 50 cm, contained within an antique birds-eye
Vectis Insula. Anglice The Isle of Wight, c.1645
Like most 17th century maps of the Isle of Wight this map is based on William White's rather erroneous survey of c.1600 which exaggerated the headlands and the depth of the bays. The famous Blaeu family were at the forefront of map-making throughout the 17th century and produced exquisite maps of all parts of the world, including the counties and islands of Great Britain.
£550
John Norden (1548-1626)
original engraved map, hand coloured, 30 x 32 cm, contained within an antique birds-eye maple frame
Hamshire olim pars Belgarum, 1610
This fascinating map was prepared for William Camden's 'Britannia' and is engraved by William Hole after a survey by John Norden. Norden had planned to survey the whole country and produce a set of maps to improve on his contemporary Christopher Saxton's famous atlas, but unfortunately a lack of financial backing stalled the project after just a few counties. The maps shows Hampshire divided into its many hundreds, the ancient county subdivisions.
