Martin Snape was a lifelong friend of the Rector of St Mary the Virgin, Rowner, the Rev. Edward Stapland Prideaux-Brune who was instituted in 1884. Snape's many visits to the parish of Rowner often took him to the 'Wildgrounds' with its abundance of wildlife and ancient oaks. For many years a gamekeeper controlled the area and lived in nearby Middle Barn Cottage. Snape was a friend of his and would often walk the grounds with him.

A very interesting view from the Edwardian period. The centre of the picture is dominated by the Granary & Bakery (part of which was destroyed by German bombs in WWII and has recently been rebuilt). The low building to the left is Queen Victoria's private railway station. The handsome 18th century house, behind the bank to the right of the granary, is the officer's residence in Priddy's Hard and was demolished in the 1950s.

The Landing Stages, Gosport, c.1905
one of a strictly limited edition of 500 colour prints produced by Richard Martin Gallery, 26 x 36 cm, framed & glazed
There were three ferries operating at this time from Gosport, one to the Point at Old Portsmouth, one to The Hard and a separate chain ferry to Old Portsmouth. The Georgian Market Hall dominates the background to the left; a fine building, built to a classical design in 1811 and pulled down unceremoniously in the 1960s. The long building to the centre is Camper & Nicholson's yacht builders, still operating today. From this building the classic 'J' class yachts Shamrock and Endeavour were built and launched. The building beyond Camper's to the right is Ratsey's sailmakers. Much of the area in the foreground was reclaimed from the sea in the 1920s and now forms the ferry gardens.
