William Lionel Wyllie (1851-1931)

W.L. Wyllie is generally regarded as Britain’s premier marine artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Richard Martin Gallery hold regular exhibitions of his work including etchings, watercolours and oil paintings.

‘The Admiral’s Yacht and Victory, Portsmouth’
This particularly fine and evocative watercolour looks toward the mouth of the harbour, with Old Portsmouth to the left and HMS Victory in the centre, partially obscured by the Admiral's Yacht. Beyond to the right is HMS St Vincent which was moored near the mouth of Haslar Creek and served as a training ship for boy cadets for many years.
An example of Wyllie’s very best work dating from the early years of the 20th century.

HMS Renown Leaving Portsmouth Harbour
Fort Blockhouse (the submarine base HMS Dolphin) in Gosport is shown to the left. On the Portsmouth side the dominant building is Clarence Pavilion, destoyed by enemy bombing during World War II. The tower of W.L. Wyllie's home and studio (Tower House) can be seen rising above the Round Tower. Renown and her sister ship Repulse, launched in 1916, were the world's fastest capital ships upon completion. HMS Renown served in both World Wars.

HMS Victory Firing a Salute in Portsmouth Harbour, Old Portsmouth beyond
After the Battle of Trafalgar HMS Victory served as a naval warship for seven further years. In 1812 she was moored in Portsmouth Harbour and remained there, afloat for 110 years, until 1922 when she was put into dry dock and eventually restored and opened to the public.

Tower Bridge was built by Sir John Wolf Barry and opened in 1894. It is known as the water gate of London and is the last bridge across the river. The top span was originally open to the public, but after a number of suicides was closed.

HMS Britannia on the Dart
HMS Britannia was built in Portsmouth in 1860 as one of the last unarmoured first rate warships built for the Royal Navy and completed a year before the ironclad HMS Warrior. She was originally named Prince of Wales but as her design became obsolete she was renamed Britannia in 1869 and moved to Dartmouth. There she served as a training ship and accommodation to Royal Navy Officer Cadets before giving her name to the Britannia Royal Naval College built at Dartmouth in 1905.
