Alexis Hubert Jaillot (c.1632-1712) was one of the most important French cartographers of the seventeenth century. This fine chart of the Isle of Wight and the coast from Kimmeridge to Selsey is originally from his monumental sea atlas 'Cartes Marines a l'usage des Armees du Roy de la Grande Bretagne', which was prepared for King William III and was published by Pieter Mortier in 1693. This was one of the most sumptuous atlases produced in the 17th century and was only the second sea-atlas to be drawn on Mercator's projection. The map includes two compass roses and numerous rhumb-lines to aid navigation.
