One of Sir William Flint's neighbours, Dame Marie Rambert, operated the Mercury Theatre and Ballet School in a converted church hall in Notting Hill, London. Here Flint depicts one of the school's rehearsal rooms with a group of dancers at rest, a number of them costumed to represent different ballets. One dancer testing her pointe slipper wears a white stiff tutu evocative of Swan Lake, while her companion poses in a long flimsy skirt like the Wilis from Giselle. Seated next to the mirror is a dancer wearing a Spanish-influenced outfit suitable for Don Quixote.
