Geoff Hunt joined the navy in 1949 aged 16 as a cadet at the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth and, after a long and varied career, left the navy in 1988. A keen painter all his life, he started painting miniatures when his wife, who collects antique snuff boxes, asked him to decorate the lid of one. The commissions soon followed and he became an established and highly respected miniature artist specialising in marine subjects. His works are notable for extremely fine detail, the hallmark of an accomplished miniature painter.
He was known to put a great deal of effort into research, using contemporary paintings, prints and photographs to reconstruct the many views and battle scenes he depicted.
It should be noted that there are two marine artists called Geoff Hunt, the other was born in 1948 and is well known for illustrating the covers of the Patrick O'Brian novels.
