A very atmospheric and interesting watercolour depicting various craft at the mouth of the harbour. To the extreme left can be seen the ancient walls of Fort Blockhouse (later HMS Dolphin) on the Gosport side. Henry VIII's historic Round Tower and the 'Hot Walls' can be seen near the centre background.
Charles Taylor exhibited at the Royal Institution between 1843 and 1866, and also at the Royal Academy in 1846, 1847 and 1849. His work was almost exclusively marine including views on the Thames and in Portsmouth Harbour.
