Jackson Simpson was born in Aberdeen into a large family and where he came under the influence of his uncle who was head of Gray's School of Art where Jackson studied. He painted and etched many scenes in his native Scotland including landscapes, waterfowl, dogs and fishermen. He fought in the Great War where he won the Military Cross.
