Charles William Wyllie was the son of genre painter William Morrison Wyllie, and the younger brother of the marine painter William Lionel Wyllie. During the 1870s and 80s the Wyllie family lived for part of the year at Wimereux in Northern France, moving back to London for the winter. The picture was undoubtedly painted on one of the summers spent in Northern France. A precocious talent, Charles first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872 when just thirteen years old. His work is similar in style to his brother's, though is notable for a very adept handling of light.
