A depiction of Portsmouth town hall in the High Street is it appeared in the late 18th and early 19th century. Built in 1739, the town hall incorporated civic offices above a covered market which included a butchers' shambles and fish market. It was later judged to be an impediment to the smooth running of traffic along the High Street and was demolished in 1838.
