John Ward (1798-1849) was born in Hull, the son of a master mariner. He was apprenticed as a house and ship painter, a trade he followed all his life despite becoming a successful artist. He is considered the best known of the Hull School of marine painters and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1840 and 1847.
