A view from Old Portsmouth looking towards Bembridge on the Isle of Wight, with the fairway buoys visible in the foreground marking the channel of deeper water into the harbour. Three of Palmerston's forts are shown in the image, Spitbank Fort is the closer, with Horse Sand Fort to the left and No Man's Land Fort to the right adjacent to a Swedish square-rigger at anchor.
The large painting that served as the source for this atmospheric etching was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1925.
