Roscoe (Thomas). Summer Tour to the Isle of Wight; including Portsmouth, Southampton, Winchester, The South Western Railway, &c., London: J. & F. Harwood, 1843

With thirty-four full page engraved views and eighteen vignette views including the engraved title, folding engraved map of the Isle of Wight and parts of Hampshire, all edges gilt, with a neat ink ownership inscription dated 1847

Bound in the original publisher's green cloth, with blind and gilt decoration, octavo (22.2 x 14.3 cm)

Condition: The book is perfectly complete, there is a little spotting to the margins, a short tear to the folding map (reinforced with archival document tape), some cracking to the rear inner hinge, the original binding is a little faded to the spine and edges with some fraying at the extremities, but a very presentable copy of a book of 1843

An interesting and descriptive account, with observations of the people, customs, topography and history of the Island, beginning with a train journey to Southampton Pier and a pleasant evening sail across to Ryde. In the final third of the volume the tour continues through the nearby mainland with excellent descriptions of Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester.
