Isaac Walter Jenner was born in Godalming and went to sea early in life, initially in oyster and crab smacks and later in the Royal Navy where he served through the Crimean War. After leaving the navy in 1865 he took up marine painting. Jenner emigrated to Australia in 1885 and founded the Queensland Art Society in Brisbane.
