One of the great names of 20th century marine painting, Claude Muncaster was born in Sussex, the son of a landscape painter. He made several voyages as a deck hand in the 1920s on board some of the great ocean-going grain ships to Australia, later publishing a book of his experiences 'Rolling Round the Horn' in 1933. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1920, and also at the Society of Marine Artists of which he was eventually made president.
