Watercolour of Shamrock IV by Guy L'Hostis
Guy L'Hostis (born 1945)
Overall size including frame: 49.7 x 62.2 cm
Shamrock IV was designed by Charles Ernest Nicholson for Sir Thomas Lipton, being built by Camper & Nicholsons at Gosport and launched on 26th May 1914. Nicknamed the 'ugly duckling' due to her rather unconventional shape she challenged in the 1920 America's Cup but, after a promising start, was beaten by the American yacht Resolute.
Guy L'Hostis was born in Paimpol, Britanny in 1945 to a family with a strong maritime tradition. Self-taught, he very soon began to paint in gouache, oil and finally watercolour which is now his preferred technique. His great passion for painting marine impressions dates from his 29 years of experience navigating with the merchant marine as well as sailing and cruising.
