Welcome to Richard Martin Gallery
Our gallery was established in 1980 specialising in 18th, 19th and early 20th century pictures. We also restore paintings, watercolours and prints in our studio, and offer quality bespoke picture framing.
Fine Art Restoration
Our studio undertakes cleaning and restoration of oil paintings, watercolours and engravings.
With nearly 40 years of experience we have gained a fine reputation among picture dealers, as well as institutions including the National Museum of the Royal Navy, and many customers who simply want to improve the appearance of a picture that they have inherited or acquired at auction.
We will always provide you with a free initial assessment of the condition of your picture, as well as an estimate of costs for any work that we recommend.
We offer a wide selection of mouldings to suit contemporary and period subjects, and we are always happy to offer you advice on how to frame your pictures should you be unsure.
We regularly frame all manner of items from the very small to the huge, from football shirts to wartime medals, and from the ornate to the minimalist.
Our gallery retains a stock of carefully selected 18th, 19th and early 20th century paintings, watercolours and prints relating to Britain's rich maritime heritage, especially views in and around The Solent and Portsmouth Harbour whether depicting ships from Nelson's time or j-class racing yachts.
Free postage to any UK destination.
Gosport, Portsmouth & Hampshire
We are proud of the rich maritime history of Gosport and Portsmouth and search far and wide to find interesting antique pictures, prints and maps of the area to offer in our gallery.
We also offer a small selection of reproduction prints of Portsmouth Harbour and Alverstoke.
Martin Snape - Gosport's Artist
Martin Snape (1852-1930) and his brother William Hamilton Snape (1862-1904) both lived in Gosport and painted views in and around the town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, providing a wonderful record of the harbour as steam replaced sail.
We regularly buy and sell works by both artists, and Richard also gives occasional lectures on their lives.
We currently have a selection of works by Martin Snape for sale in the gallery, including this very atmospheric watercolour of Gosport from Portsmouth Harbour, signed and dated 1926 and showing the old Gosport ferry in the foreground and the campanile of Holy Trinity Church beyond.
Antique Frame Restoration
We also restore antique gilt picture frames, replacing missing gesso or wooden elements of the frame and matching the colour where necessary. Frames are often restored in conjunction with paintings and can add considerably to the overall effect.

Thank you so much for the fantastic restoration of my watercolour. It was on its was to the charity shop, but I'm so glad I cam to see you first. It now hangs in pride of place in my lounge. Thank you for your very professional service and amazing skill in bringing my painting back to life!

I just want to thank you so much for the brilliant work you did on the restoration of my cat picture. What a difference your hard work has made. It originally came from my grandmother's cottage in Scotland and it has meant a lot to me to see it back to how it was.
