A View of the Town and Harbour of Portsmouth, 1779
Engraved for The Modern Universal British Traveller
hand coloured copper engraving
Double-mounted with wash lines in silver frame
Overall dimensions including frame: 40 x 50.3 cm
A view of Portsmouth Harbour from Portsdown Hill, with Portchester Castle in the foreground. Portsmouth was then confined to what is today known as 'Old Portsmouth' and the naval dockyard. The surrounding area was still rural and included the villages of Milton, Fratton and Hilsea. Gosport can clearly be seen on the other side of the harbour and a somewhat mountainous Isle of Wight beyond.
