Initially, Martin set out to be a painter of natural history subjects before turning largely to topography. That early influence is clearly shown in this wonderfully evocative view of the Hampshire countryside nearly 150 years ago. Gosport railway station, just a few yards away from Martin's home, was very convenient for painting trips and he frequently at locations along the Meon Valley Line.
