Rowland Hilder studied at Goldsmith's College and initially worked successfully as a book illustrator in the 1920s and 30s. He later turned his hand to watercolour painting, at which he excelled, and soon developed a national reputation for his landscapes, typically winter views in his native Kent. He served at President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours from 1964 to 1974.
