This interesting view of Fareham Industrial Home is taken from a position in front of the old Fareham Mill looking through the railway viaduct. Snape painted Fareham Mill many times and this view would have been well known to him.
Fareham Industrial Home was established around 1866 to train young girls for domestic service. It later became a children's home and new premises were eventually erected adjacent in 1907, with the building depicted here demolished soon afterwards. The new building was given the name St Edith's and continued in operation as a children's home until the 1960s, since when it operated as the Roundabout Hotel.
