Admiral Sir George Le Clerc Egerton KCB rose to become Second Sea Lord in 1911. During his career he served on the Arctic Expedition of 1875-76 and with the Naval Brigade in Mombasa in 1895. He became Assistant Director of Torpedoes in 1901 and in 1902 transferred to the torpedo school ship 'Vernon'.
He became aide-de-camp to King Edward VII and served in World War I as Commander-in-Chief, Plymouth before retiring in 1916. He was a very accomplished watercolourist.
