HMS Hood and Submarine X1
etching, signed in pencil
Double mounted and contained in a black wooden frame
Overall size including frame: 32.9 x 41.8 cm
HMS Hood was launched in 1918, a the end of WWI, and was famously sunk on 24 May 1941 by the German battleship Bismarck. A 15-inch shell pierced the aging Hood's inadequate armour plate and by a terrible stroke of fate ploughed its way into the main magazine. The resulting explosion disintegrated the ship and by the time the smoke had cleared she had disappeared from view beneath the waves, with only three survivors from a crew of 1419. Hood is depicted here around 1925-26 alongside HMS Submarine X1 in the foreground, the largest submarine in the world when she was launched in 1923.
We only sell original etchings by Wyllie, each bearing his pencil signature to the lower margin. Framed in our studio using conservation materials.
