William Lionel Wyllie RA (1851-1931)
Light Cruisers and Destroyers at Harwich
etching, signed in pencil
Double-mounted in black wooden frame
Overall dimensions including frame: 33 x 51.5 cm
During WW1 it was decided to establish a "Harwich Force" under the command of Commodore Tyrwhitt. The port became the base for the 1st and 3rd Destroyer Flotillas and their light cruisers, as well as the 8th Overseas Flotilla of Submarines.
Harwich was the closest suitable port to Germany and the combination of light and fast ships were intended for scouting and reconnaissance missions, while also frustrating minelaying in the channel.
We only sell original etchings by Wyllie, each bearing his pencil signature to the lower margin. Framed in our studio using conservation materials.
