The original painting of this iconic portrait of Churchill, holding a cigar and with a characteristically serious expression, was produced by Hungarian artist Arthur Pan. It was reproduced during the war in a limited edition of only 1000 copies, signed by the artist, to raise money for Clementine Churchill's Aid to Russia fund.

In an interview in 1945 Pan stated that the portrait took six months to complete and that "Mr Churchill was certainly a vert difficult sitter. He wouldn't sit still for long!".
