Royal Clarence Yard was established in 1828 as one of only two purpose-built victualling establishments (the other was at Plymouth). It supplied naval vessels in the harbour with supplies for the next 160 years, with many products being prepared and stored on site including salt beef, ship’s biscuit, water, beer and rum. The cooperage continued to make traditional wooden barrels on site until 1970 when the rum ration was finally stopped. The site was finally closed in 1991 and many of the buildings have since been converted to residential use.
