The ancient village of Wallington lies adjacent to Fareham, where the Wallington river empties into Portsmouth Harbour. The tannery was established by the 17th century and the various leather products were originally transported by sea via Fareham Quay, then also by rail after the 1840s. The tannery employed some three dozen men and was in operation right up to the First World War.
