Rowland Langmaid (1897-1956)
Rowland Langmaid, the son of a Captain, joined the Royal Navy in 1910. His service afloat during the First World War began in the battleship Agamemnon and in 1917 he was appointed to the new battlecruiser Renown. A detailed illustrated journal he kept as a Midshipman during the Dardanelles campaign is housed in the Royal Naval Museum.

After leaving the navy in 1922, probably a victim of 'Geddes Axe', Langmaid studied at the Royal Academy School and the Royal College of Art before taking up painting professionally. He also received tuition from W.L. Wyllie whom he remained heavily influenced by.

During the second World War Langmaid served as official artist to the Mediterranean Fleet with rank of Lieutenant-Commander and the National Maritime Museum possess seventeen of his wartime paintings.
